The Gallery

History

The Gallery Eumundi is one of Eumundi’s landmark buildings and has long been home to artists and art.

At first sight, it is difficult to realise that this contemporary Art Gallery, in its original form, is one of the oldest houses in Eumundi. The building was originally the home of William Beausang, who built the house around 1902. Beausang was a timber haulier and operated a bullock team. His wife was a midwife and attended many births in Eumundi`s early days. Until 1914 it served as a Catholic Church. It then housed Eumundi’s first Police Station and was reputed to have a small lock-up at the back. James Gridley, grandson of Joseph and Ellen Gridley, Eumundi’s first white selectors, purchased the home on his return from World War I’s front line in 1919. Like Beausang, he also drove a bullock team. From 1933 it served as the postmaster's house and also the home of William Webster, who was instrumental in the building of the present day Post Office. For many years, leading Sunshine Coast artist Hal Barton lived and painted here, and it was affectionately known as Hal`s House. In 1997 it became The Burns Gallery and in 1998 it became The Frances Reilly Gallery and the studio of well known artist Jill Reilly.

The Gallery Eumundi house has been altered over the years, however, it is still constructed out of timber and retains many original features. The Gallery now stands proudly amongst the tall Gum Trees surrounded by lush tropical gardens and a cascading waterfall. Our private viewings make the most of the beautiful views from the veranda overlooking the bustling market scenery and bird filled trees.
