Joanne Villani

Joanne Villani Bio Joanne Villani is an Adelaide-based artist. Her perception of art has paved the way for many sold out exhibitions and awards. Specialising within her chosen medium of mixed media, each painting is hand painted and crafted with a high level of skill, to achieve the 3 dimensional image before you. “I love to paint, it is in my soul, I would feel lost if I didn’t have a brush in my hand and an inspiration to transpose. But art is not just something to hang on a wall. It’s not just someone’s emotions, vision, and expressions on a canvas to be traded as a commodity. I see art as a poet or as an author see words. They are simply the building blocks that can be skilfully crafted to make people laugh, to make people cry, to cause a riot or to change the world. Art is a language, an expression of the soul. It gives people permission to step outside the constraints of their habitual lives and release the essence of who they really are or who they really could be.” It is believed having knowledge of the natural energies in life can bring good fortune and harmony to a person, hence the Koi fish are the symbol of good fortune, over all of Asia. As fish seem to bring good energy I decided to harness that in my art work, developing a technique of painting Koi fish in layers between clear resin, to create a life like three dimensional image of a gold fish swimming in water. This journey took many years to develop, which now brings you this collective of work. Joanne uses beautiful hand made clay bowls, made for her by other artists, or any other unusual or different bowls she can find. She starts her process by laying down a thick layer of resin to give the depth of water, and that the fish are swimming. She then paints a solid layer of paint to create the shadow on the bottom of the bowl. After that it is a long process of approximately 6 weeks painting very thin layers of paint between very thin layers of resin, approximately 15-30 layers, to give the illusion of a three dimensional image. Sometimes she paints delicate leaves on the top as leaves floating on the water. She calls herself a human 3D printer. Joanne is now showing her works across Australia, England, America and many parts of Asia. She is a successful artist with over 25 years of experience. She has had quite a few sold-out exhibitions over the years, and has travelled extensively with her art.
