What’s in a name?

In the gallery, we often talk about “The Title” of a piece of art and wonder how important is it?

That title can be the quirky hook that stops you in your tracks and draws you back to a piece of art to consider and contemplate for a longer moment. Or maybe the art itself has overwhelmed our senses and the title is almost overlooked at the time of impact, but maybe something to ponder on at a later time.

“The Title” alone may satisfy our analytical left side of the brain, offering an explanation versus the creative visual input stimulating the right side of the brain. The information gathered together may lead to the full impact enabling an overall experience.

From talking to various artists “The Title” may be the beginning of the process, more often the ending and occasionally absent and unnecessary for the creator of the art piece. Whichever way, you look at it there is no clear answer, the title can be everything or nothing to the viewer and even the artist depending on the moment in time!

Anecdotally on occasion, we have even been asked to change a title by a client, of course, we can’t and won’t, but it does lead you to wonder if some new owners do!! This week we are thinking about some interesting titles, we’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject. We absolutely love getting any feedback, questions and arty dialogue. Have a great week…
